SENIORS WHAT TO WEAR GUIDE

Hey BeYOUtiful!

You did it.

No seriously, you did. You might almost not have, if you're like my kid and suffered extreme bouts of Senioritis that nearly gave me an ulcer and kept me up nights wondering if he'd keep his focus.

But if your reading this, chances are, you should be on track(ish) and not far from GRADUATION!

And it deserves to be celebrated.

I tell families that Senior photos are the last formal images most kids will take until and if, they marry. It's a big deal and it wouldn't be a major milestone in modern day society if we didn't commemorate this accomplishment with a 1000 photos. Right?

Pictures or it didn't happen.

Except these are not selfies or snapshots, they are portraits and they take some preparation.

Like it or not, these images are going to be everywhere. Literally. Your socials, your parents socials, my socials, graduation announcements, grandma's socials, maybe your parents wall in a printed size that resembles a San Antonio building mural (like my parents still have)....so we want to get it right.

In order to make this as easy and stress free for you and your parents as possible I've put together a comprehensive guide of what to wear, and what NOT to wear and how best to plan.

So how many "Fits" should you bring?

Three. You should bring three.

Casual, Unique to you, and something Dressy or formal

Why bring three? Well, it's simple. We want to tell a story of who you are and we need a little variety to do that. You're nearly an adult and you've learned how to define yourself through a lot of different interests, your clothing is a big part of that. We want to highlight some of your uniqueness and bringing three outfits helps us bring that to the front of the room in your photos. So, how do you plan these outfits? So glad you asked!

Your CASUAL outfit should be the first outfit out of the gate. We'll be getting to know each other. It takes a minute to get comfortable with each other. So let's keep it relaxed. No, don't bring the 'maybe?' dirty shirt off your floor from laundry you didn't fold a week ago. Think polished casual. Think about how you'd look for a date. Solid or textured tee-shirts, layer it up with a button down shirt, or a great jacket. A cute skirt or dark jeans. If your a sneakerhead a great pair of sneakers, and even if you're not, make sure your shoes are CLEAN. For girls casual can look a bit different as we tend to dress up more than dress down casual looks. DO THAT! Casual but cool is our goal. The absolute most important thing is to make sure you can move and be comfortable in what you're wearing because we will be on the move and I'll be posing you like a pretzel. Just kidding, but comfort is key. If you FEEL uncomfortable in your clothing, you'll look uncomfortable in your clothing. You'll hate those images, and I want you to love them.

The next outfit you should bring is something UNIQUE TO YOU. I want you to BE YOU, because that is BeYOUtiful! See what I did there? What does that even mean though? Well, some of my Seniors are athletes. Some are musicians. Some are gamers. Some are farmers or cowboys. Some are dancers. You get the idea. Who are you?! Let's get you in something that helps bring out the most unique parts of you. If you're an athlete, bring a uniform or a letterman's jacket. If you're an artist, maybe you want to bring an easel and dirty paint clothes and a palette of paint. We'll discuss this outfit in more detail during our phone consultation, but we're really looking for something that helps define you, no matter what that is. But seriously, no pressure. If you don't have a hobby or something that stands out, we'll just plan a second casual/fun outfit.

Your final outfit should be DRESSY. I mean stepping it up ALL THE WAY. For my male clients, there is nothing better than a suit. Absolutely nothing. I know not every 17 year old owns a suit so if you don't have a suit, dress slacks, dress shoes and a tie will elevate you to where we want to be. Think dress watches, not apple watches. Texan's also have a different style suit that might include a Stetson, and cowboy boots. Yes, this works for what we're talking about here! For Senior girls, think formal gowns, dresses, pant suits. We want you feeling like you rule the world, because you're about to. When you dress up, your confidence follows and it looks amazing. Psst....that's the look we're going for.

You Should!

For my girls, if you typically don't wear make up, I encourage a little for these sessions. Going with a light foundation to smooth out skin tones, a little blush to bring out color, light mascara to pop the eyes with a touch of color on the lips is a must. A mock run before photos is ideal. If you're great with make up, do your own. If you're not, a trip to Ulta or hiring a MUA can be a fun girls day out/in prior to your session.

Make sure your nails are neat. No need to get a full set of nails, but ensure polish is all off, or all.

Choose Earth, jewel, neutral tones for wardrobe, they work year round.

Choose great textures and avoid busy patterns.

Layer it up. Great coats, button down shirts with the sleeves rolled, a fur shawl a loose hanging tie. Layers give dimension and add depth

Make sure your shirt, doesn't match your skin tone. Create a break with a darker or lighter color by a few shades.

The only colors to avoid are bright reds (think holiday red), orange (rust or burnt orange is ok) and fluorescents. They all cast a color onto the skin and can take over the overall image.

You Should Not.

Wear shirts with large logos, writing, or images on them. They are distracting to the overall image and do exactly as they are intended by drawing your eye to the advertising. Stick to basics. Even if you're a brand rep on the side, this session is about YOU and that's where we want our focus.

Avoid mixing too many patterns. Stripes with larger stripes works. Stripes with polka dots with paisley....do not, unless you are truly a funky vibe and I DO have those Seniors, we want the chaos to be intentional not accidental.

You should NOT wear ALL black. Black absorbs light and causes a loss of detail. If you're wearing black make sure you break it up with additional layers/colors.

You Should!

Accessorize! What is an accessory? A great necklace or grandma's pearls, bracelet, cute earrings, an amazing hat, bowties, belts, scarves, cufflinks, your grandfather's watch or Fedora, a dress watch, a fantastic pair of sunglasses. It's all fun and adds a lot to the overall images. This is a dress-up event! Dress up! But, don't choose them all. I'll help you pare it down if you bring too much.

You should be... confident and comfortable in WHATEVER you wear. If you're uncomfortable, it translates to your images. Pulling on straps or worrying about how it fits during the session distracts from the moment. So whatever you choose, feel great wearing it.

You Should Not.

Leave off transition lenses. The eyes should be visible, unless it's intentional. If you wear transition lenses, consider removing your glasses for the photos or wearing contacts for the day.

You should remove silicone bracelets, earbuds (you wouldn't believe how many Seniors leave them in) and apple watches. Consider a dress watch instead.

Wear wrinkled clothing, (really ever, but...teenagers) For today, steam/iron what you plan to wear before your session. A few wrinkles are ok, we can edit them out. The previously on the floor clothes, leave them there, not our session.

Bring a bag for personal items you may forget to take off, or don't want to hold and secure phones or bulky items in them not in your pockets.

Spit out yer' gum. Yeah, we can see it in photos when you smile.

Hair

You should not do anything drastic to your hair before photos. If you've always had purple hair, that's fantastic, rock it! However, making drastic changes days or weeks before your session to your color or length may be disastrous if you hate it. We want you to feel great. If you hate your hair, you'll hate those photos. Forever.
